A GOOD season had led to some excellent competition in the fleece section of this year’s Campbell Town Show.

A large number of top quality fleece made judging a tough job last weekend but in the end it was two of the state’s well known wool operations that claimed the major awards.  Carol and Allan Phillips took home the coveted New England Wool competition with a fleece from their Glen Stuart operation near Deddington. This is the third time the couple have won the New England competition.

TASMANIAN superfine wool put in a good show at the prestigious Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Trophy awards, with the state accounting for six of the ten finalists.

Angie and David Waters, Tarrangower Merinos at Hillgrove near Armidale have culled their flock by half to survive drought but their efforts in producing super fine wool keep winning high praise from Ermenegildo Zegna.

Fifth and sixth generation wool producers David and Angie Waters, Tarrangower Merinos, have survived seven years of below normal rainfall at Hillgrove east of Armidale.

WHEN it comes to fine wool, the Rowbottoms are the family who have three bags full. They again took out the Vellus Aureum trophy for the best sheep wool in the world, the golden fleece.

WOOL A TOP line-up of fleeces in this year’s Make Smoking History Wagin Woolorama wool section had the judges working hard to come up with their overall winner. The depth of quality in this year’s event, which saw 130 fleeces entered from 115 entrants, deserved even more credit than normal given the tough season most growers had experienced in 2018 with a later than usual start. The overall winning fleece wasn’t just fine on the day, it was grand when the champion fine wool fleece exhibited by the Rintoul family, Tilba Tilba stud, Williams, was announced the grand champion fleece of the event.

Profitability per hectare is the key driver for the Kinghorn family’s Merino sheep and Hereford cattle operation in Victoria’s Western District.

And to maximise this, they are mixing traditional breeding principles with modern and intensive management.

Tom and Sherrie Spielvogel, Morrisons, sold bales of their ultrafine wool to impressive results at auction last week.

The bales, which ranged from 13-13.2 micron, sold between 4190-4288 cents a kilogram greasy through AuctionsPlus.

Tasmanian woolgrowers Allan and Carol Phillips, Deddington, were recently awarded the highest quality accolade, 1PP certification, for a bale of wool.

The list of John Ive’s achievements through a career dedicated to agriculture and for which he has been awarded the Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division is simply too detailed to recount.

Suffice to say, congratulations are in order to the superfine woolgrower from Yass for service to the superfine wool growing industry.
