November 2011

The season in the Mudgee region could be described as good.  We had a dry winter with a slow start to spring, however with further falls of rain we should have an average season for woolgrowing.  From what I have seen and heard, the wool from the region has been surprisingly sound and in most areas with a low vm in the fleece, however skirtings are higher as would be expected after the big season and resulting long grass from the last spring.

As far as wool prices go those who managed to sell earlier received very good prices, however it is very disappointing to see what has happened since, with an average drop of some 300 cents.  The market seems to be stabilising at the last sales so we can only hope that there will be an improvement.

As would be the case in most areas we are hoping for a good lambing this year.  At least we didn't get the huge fall of rain that took out so many of the October drop lambs last year!  The overall sheep numbers are down across the region so a good lambing is needed to build up numbers.

While lamb and mutton prices remain where they are, there is little incentive to retain older wethers for woolcutting , for those that have any that is.
