NOVEMBER 2009

Dry warm conditions are bringing a quick end to what has been a good to very good season throughout the Hamilton region.  Harvest is now in full swing.

Wool prices are still a major concern to superfine woolgrowers, however most are optimistic that prices will improve and are continuing with their core business of growing wool.  The high prices for mutton and surplus sheep are helping to keep wool growing viable.

Some diversification into cropping and prime lambs is taking place.  An indication of a lesser number of merino ewes joined to merino rams can be gauged by the lower number of merino rams being sold by studs across the region.  However, vendors are pleased with prices received, most similar or higher than last year.

In general the regions superfine woolgrowers obviously wish to continue growing wool but will continue to diversify to other enterprises if their wool income doesn’t improve.
